Key to icons and links in publications

In order to ensure optimum access to our group's publications we offer multiple ways of accessing them. They are denoted by the icons to the side of the publication.

  • [DOI] Access to the publishers website using the papers DOI (digital object identifier). The link uses an external resolver to convert the DOI to connect to the publishers website. The amount of information available on that site will depend on the publisher and any subscriptions you, or the Institution providing your internet access, may have. Typically this will give the asbtract to all users but will be more restrictive on access to the full text of the paper (sometimes requiring a fee or subscription). This is the authoritative record of this publication.
  • [arXiv] Access to a preprint version of the paper on an external repository. Usually this is the Physics ArXiv site (formally "cond-mat") with "arXiv" pronounced "archive". This will give free access to the paper for anybody. However, this will usually not be identical to the final published version as publishers will copy edit the paper. It should be fairly close to the final version.
  • [Bham repository] Access to a preprint version of the paper on a Birmingham University Repository. This will give free access to the paper for anybody. It may not be identical to the final published version as publishers will copy-edit the paper. It should be fairly close to the final version.
  • [Open Access] Open access to the published version of the paper that is free for anybody.
