Taking notesPostgraduate Courses

There are two postgraduate lectures per week during term time. The usual length of a course is a term, however some courses have been one and a half terms in duration. The courses are on a three year cycle, so each student goes to a course each term. The reasons for this are partly practical - it is not economical to run every course each year - and partly educational - that this allows the students to concentrate on research. We also find the students motivation in the courses is high as they are not overloaded with lectures.

Obviously to some extent the courses reflect the group's research interests, some breadth is provided, in the direction of electronic structure, experimental probes and statistical mechanics. In addition there are many M Sci courses (and postgraduate courses provided by the other research groups) covering areas such as General Relativity, Cosmology, Particle Physics etc.

A selection of courses which are always offered follows; in addition there are several short courses on more topical themes.

- Electronic Structure and the Periodic table
- Probes of Condensed Matter
- Many Body Physics
- Bosonic Physics
- Quantum Field Theory
- Feynman Path Integrals
- Critical Phenomena and Renormalisation Group methods
